Locri is situated 7 metres above sea level and is a very popular town as well as a famous archeological sight in the province of Reggio Calabria. Gerace, the so called ‘pearl of the Ionion Sea’ is situated in the Province of Reggio Calabria and offers a historical centre with many monuments and sights from Norman times. Among the largest and most impressive buildings is the Gerace Cathedral, also known as the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta,which is an architectural legacy of national beauty and the largest cathedral in Calabria. The old established locals are telling that once upon a time, there existed 128 churches in Gerace. At the end of 17th century, 43 churches remained, but after the earthquake in 1783 they were reduced to 17. Most of these 17 churches are now abandoned.
